The large majority of our impressions of the world come through our eyes, and light is necessary to vision. Light is therefore the medium through which a majority of people perceive the world.
Lighting in design
Lighting can affect your mood and even the overall perceived size of a space, which is why it is an essential element to any design scheme. When planning your lighting, look at the activities that occur in each room, the atmosphere you want to create and the decorative elements you wish to emphasize. There are three main types of interior lighting: General lighting, Task lighting, Ambient lighting.
A good lighting plan combines all three types to light an area, according to function and style.
General lighting provides a uniform glow over an entire room and illuminating a space functionally rather than for aesthetic reasons.
A central pendant light is perhaps the most commonly used source of general lighting. A strategically placed pendant light or chandelier above the dining room table is an important part of the design and can create a welcoming atmosphere. Tip: Install a dimmer so you can add some drama and ambience.
Task lighting helps you perform specific tasks such as cooking or reading and provides focused light where needed. Is important to combine it with adequate ambient light to avoid eye strain caused by the sharp contrast from light to dark areas.
Accent lighting creates visual interest and highlights a particular feature in a room like painting, sculpture objects in cabinets. It requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting around it.
